SMG’s Lobby Day 2013
The sport, physical activity and recreation sector had a busy day on Parliament Hill on April 23rd. We met with over 40 MPs, Ministers, Senators and senior policy advisors to put forward three key messages to advance our agenda. Click here to see our sector’s key messages outlined in the 2013 Lobby Day brochure.
Most of the officials we met with understand that Canadians need to get more physically active, want more Canadian athletes on the podium, and realize there is a recreation infrastructure deficit in this country. Several commented that they liked that we were making the connection between Canadian’s increasingly sedentary lifestyle and its dramatic impact on healthcare costs. Though there is support for our sector and the important work we do, Canada has a burgeoning deficit and available funding resources are scarce. We will continue to drive home that support for sport, physical activity and recreation programming is cost-effective and could help reduce healthcare spending in long run.
We will have the opportunity to keep our awareness campaign going. More than 20 MPs, who were not able to meet with us on April 23rd, have expressed an interest in meeting with us in the near future. If you missed our April 23rd meeting but don’t want to miss out, or want to continue your participation in future political meetings, don’t hesitate to contact me. We appreciate your support and involvement.
